Rural Reminder

Education Week reports on a roving math professional development program in South Dakota. The state department there is using Title II funds to support the program, which begins with a week long summer seminar and continues as professional developers meet with participating teachers in regional meetings. Professional developers then drive to participants' schools, where they observe and work with teachers. Although the article doesn't mention the state's large rural population, the program seems to designed to help address the challenge of rural educators' access to professional development.

Rural Reminder

The big news in rural education last week was that when Congress approved the $700 billion plan to stabilize credit markets, it also re-authorized the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, which provides federal aid to make up for diminished timber-tax revenues in districts that are home to national forests. Payments go to 700 counties in 39 states; the five largest beneficiaries are Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.

2008 National Rural Education Needs Assessment

Please ask rural folks you know to consider contributing their input to the 2008 National Rural Education Needs Assessment being conducted by the Rural Education Center at Edvantia (RECE). Information from the survey will be used to inform policymakers, educators, and researchers (and, I confess, improve RECE services to clients).

Rural Reminder

Humorist and author Tom Bodett writes about the experience of living in small towns. Here's an excerpt from his blog:

"The only real difference between living in a small town or a big one is that it’s harder to avoid people you don’t like out here. It forces you to get to know them. It requires patience sometimes. And you often have to politely listen to views you don’t agree with. It doesn’t make us bitter, but it does make us better. At least better than we would be."

The Journal of Research in Rural Education publishes research that is of demonstrable relevance to educational issues within rural settings. JRRE welcomes single-study investigations, historical and philosophical analyses, research syntheses, theoretical pieces, and policy analyses from multiple disciplinary perspectives. We welcome manuscripts concerning learning and instruction; preservice and inservice teacher education; educational leadership; educational policy; rural education and community development, and the cultural, historical, and economic context of rural education. Brief commentary on recently published JRRE articles is also appropriate.
