Rural Reminder

The big news in rural education last week was that when Congress approved the $700 billion plan to stabilize credit markets, it also re-authorized the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, which provides federal aid to make up for diminished timber-tax revenues in districts that are home to national forests. Payments go to 700 counties in 39 states; the five largest beneficiaries are Oregon, California, Washington, Idaho, and Montana.
