Rural Reminder

According to the Carsey Institute--a national policy research center at the University of New Hampshire focusing on youth, working families, and sustainable development in small cities and rural communities--there are three "rural Americas":

1. Amenity rich areas that are growing as baby boomers retire, as more people buy second homes, and as “footloose professionals” choose to settle in small town communities with rich natural amenities or outside large cities

2. Declining and transitioning resource dependent areas, where once agriculture, timber, mining or related manufacturing industries supported a solid blue collar middle class, albeit with booms and busts

3. Chronically poor communities, places with majority people of color, as well as Appalachia and the Ozarks, where decades of resource extraction and under-investment have left a legacy of poverty and under-resourced public institutions

Check out their presentation on rural poverty and development challenges.

Rural Reminder

A colleague on the rural sociology listserv, Leann Tigges of the University of Wisconsin, led the compilation of a list of rural sociology "must reads." Listserv participants across the country made suggestions ranging from Granovetter's classic "The Strength of Weak Ties" to the Floras' most recent edition of Rural Communities: Legacy and Change.

The resulting bibliography is available here.

Rural Reminder

This week's Rural Reminder acknowledges that the word "rural" can be difficult to enunciate. Especially when paired with other words.

International Rural Education symposium

Dear Colleague,

I am writing to you in regard to the International Symposium for Innovation in Rural Education (ISFIRE), to be held at the University of New England, Australia in February 2009. The symposium will be hosted by the National Centre for Science, ICT and Mathematics Education in Rural and Regional Australia (SiMERR Australia) with support from the NURI-TEIC research centre, Kongju National University, South Korea.

We are currently inviting respected international researchers and educators such as yourself to promote the symposium within your networks and to help us identify prospective members of the symposium Scientific Committee. It would be greatly appreciated if you would kindly respond to this email to:

  • indicate whether you would be willing to distribute our Call for Papers among your rural education colleagues and networks;
  • nominate four or five key individuals or organisations from your country you think would be interested in submitting papers for ISFIRE 2009;
  • nominate one or two prominent researchers in rural education you consider well suited to be members of the Scientific Committee. We would encourage you to also nominate yourself and to send us your CV;
  • nominate a leading rural education researcher/educator from your country you consider suitable as a keynote speaker. Again you are most welcome to also nominate yourself. We are currently exploring avenues for funding additional international keynotes and the configuration of the final programme will depend on securing these funds.

Our website will be live by the end of April and the Call for Papers announced at that time. However, we can tell you that within the overall context of rural education, ISFIRE 2009 will have eight themes:

1. Promoting Policy Initiatives
2. Nurturing Teacher Experience
3. Enhancing Student Experience/Growth
4. Building School Community
5. Responding to Cultural Diversity
6. Optimizing Curriculum
7. Improving Resourcing
8. Addressing Special Issues

We will contact you to let you know when website is online. In the meantime, I hope that you are able to assist us in promoting and designing the symposium as a significant international forum on issues in rural education, and look forward to hearing from you in due course.

kind regards,
Terry Lyons
Co-Chair, ISFIRE Scientific Committee

Rural Reminder

If you missed the Appalachia Regional Comprehensive Center's webcast 10 Million Children: Teaching and Learning in Rural Schools, you can find it archived online at http://www.edvantia.org/publications/arccwebcast/march08/

The webcast features rural education royalty talking about some key rural issues:

The webcast also includes two brief films featuring rural schools and districts doing neat stuff. For instance, Cannon County High School staff discuss their approach to place-based education, in which curriculum is aligned to both standards and community needs (check out their greenhouse project and their biofuel effort)!
