EDWARD W. CHANCE MEMORIAL RURAL EDUCATION DISSERTATION AWARD

$500.00

The National Rural Education Association sponsors the Edward W. Chance Memorial Rural Education Dissertation Award. The award id funded by the Chance family, through the NREA Foundation, to recognize doctoral research which makes a significant contribution to rural education and addresses issues of current concern. The research could include, but is not limited to, issues of rural school efficiency and effectiveness, rural students’ learning and development, financing rural schools, rural poverty, the rural economy, student/rural community expectations, understanding the diversity of rural administrators, or alternative instructional and organizational patterns for rural education. The dissertation judged most meritorious will receive the award and the author will be recognized at the NREA national convention in San Antonio, Texas, on October 27-29, 2008.

APPLICATION PROCESS: DUE DATE JUNE 15, 2008

Electronically submit a packet that includes the following:

  1. Biographical and directory information for the author, including name address, telephone numbers, and email address.
  2. Digital copy of a 20 – page summary of the dissertation. (the length excludes length of reference list)
  3. The summary should cover, as closely as possible, the following aspects of the study: The problem statement, the research question, methodology, findings, conclusions, and significance of the study to rural education.
  4. Degree completion date.
  5. A statement of agreement with NREA to publicize the research through media consistent with association purposes. NREA imposes no infringement in the researcher’s copyright or other publication efforts.

SELECTION CRITERIA:

  1. Significance of the study to rural education. (30 points)
  2. Contribution to knowledge. (30 points)
  3. Thoroughness of research (20 points)
  4. Segments reflecting: problem statement, the research question, methodology, findings, significance, and conclusions. (10 points)
  5. NREA membership. (10 points)

RESERVATIONS:

  1. Selection, rejection, and judging are the reserved rights of the NREA Research Committee. The Research committee reserves the option of making appropriate inquires on any study submitted.
  2. NREA assumes the privilege of reproducing all or a portion of the research in the Rural Educator or other professional venues.
  3. NREA reserves the right to acknowledge the researcher’s application to the agency or institution with which the research is associated.
  4. A researcher may receive this award only once within a five year period.
