Govt to ensure proper use of rural compulsory education fund

The Chinese government will not allow anyone to withhold or appropriate for other purpose the fund for rural compulsory education in the country, said a senior official of the Ministry of Education. The fund should not be used to pay debt or teachers' salary and subsidies, said Tian Shulan, who is in charge of discipline inspection, during an on-the-spot investigation into rural compulsory education in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, south China, on Wednesday.

India to launch rural job scheme

Under the National Rural Guarantee Scheme one member from each of India's 60 million rural households is guaranteed 100 days of work each year. They will receive a minimum wage of 60 rupees ($1.35) or an unemployment allowance if there is no work. More than a third of India's population of more than one billion people lives on less than $1 a day.

Delta Farmers Get Gov¡¯t Financial Support

Shi Haiyan, a farmer in east China's Zhejiang Province, will begin her study at the Zhejiang Forestry College after the Spring Festival, or the Chinese Lunar New Year holidays. What makes her different from other students in the college is that the Zhejiang Provincial government will pay her two-year tuition fees. During her stay at the college, Shi will study the prevention and treatment of forest diseases and insect pests, cultivation of cash fruit trees, cultivation of medicinal herbs in mountainous areas, raising special cash animals, cultivation of highland vegetables and other modern farming techniques.

Romanian education gets WB financing

The World Bank (WB) intends to reduce the difference between rural and urban education systems by granting Romania a 60 million dollars credit to improve the rural education system. The program should offer better study conditions for the pupils that live in the rural areas and lead to improvement for teachers working in these areas, said Mihail Haradau, the Minister of Education and Research. "I do not want to say whether it is a small or large sum but it will help the Romanian education system," said Haradau after meeting the World Bank delegation, led by Maureen McLaughlin.

NEPAL, 2 February (IRIN) - The decision in late November 2005 by Nepal's Maoist rebels to form an alliance with the main political parties against King Gyanendra, has met with muted enthusiasm from many Nepalis, in particular teachers and school students who say that even if peace does come to the Himalayan kingdom, it will take years for Nepal to put its education sector right again. "The situation with regard to education has become so bad that it will take several decades to restore what we had achieved before the conflict started," said Dipendra Roka, a schoolteacher in Salle village in Rukum district, about 300 km northwest of the capital, Kathmandu.
