From the E-Mail Box of the Executive Director - Winter 2006 Update
Winter News Update
January 31, 2006
Dear AERA Members:
I am writing to provide an update on important events and activities of the Association. First and foremost, for voting members, the AERA ballot was mailed on January 27 and you should be receiving it shortly. In 2006, members will be voting for a President-elect as well as a Council Member-at-Large for the Association. Division members will be voting for Vice President or Secretary, where applicable, while SIG members will be voting for two members of the SIG Executive Committee. Also this year, voting members will be voting on a membership referendum relating to Bylaw changes. The AERA Council undertook a year-long study of the AERA Bylaws and is recommending a set of modifications to the membership. Please participate in the democratic process of the Association and exercise your vote. Your ballot must be received by March 2, 2006.
The Annual Meeting is also fast upon us—April 7-11, 2006 in San Francisco. I want to urge members who have not yet registered or made hotel reservations to please do so. The Program Committee, Divisions, and SIGs have planned an excellent program once again this year, and we are breaking pre-registration records as of this date. We want to be sure that you are located in one of your first choice hotels and that you receive the benefit of the special discounted pre-registration rates. The final program and the online searchable programs will be posted on the AERA website next week. Meanwhile, you can pre-register for the meeting and also register for professional development courses and tours. If you have already registered and might be interested in taking a course before or during the Annual Meeting or joining a tour, you can re-enter the registration system to make additional selections by using the password included in your confirmation e-mail.
I want to call your attention to the Editors' Mentoring Roundtable Session for Early-Career Scholars. The deadline to apply for this closed session (to discuss a manuscript with an editor) has been extended to Friday, February 3, 2006. Please review this announcement (http://eloop.goldlasso.com/redir.php?s=4385&u=2549258&f=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aera.net%2Fopportunities%2F%3Fid%3D993 ) and apply or encourage junior colleagues and advanced graduate students to apply. Accepted applicants will be notified by February 15th, and a draft manuscript will be due no later than March 24th.
I also want to urge you to visit the AERA Bookstore which features important books published by the Association at special member discounted rates. Our four most recent volumes include Studying Teacher Education: The Report of the AERA Panel on Research and Teacher Education (co-edited by Marilyn Cochran-Smith and Kenneth M. Zeichner), Black Education: A Transformative Research and Action Agenda for the New Century (edited by Joyce E. King), and Volumes 28 and 29 of Review of Research in Education. Volume 28 is a special issue edited by Robert E. Floden on Brown's Influence on Education; Volume 29 edited by Laurence Parker is a special issue on The Elementary and Secondary Education Act at 40. I am especially pleased to report that Studying Teacher Education was just awarded the Outstanding Publications Award by the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE) at its Annual Meeting, January 29-February 1, 2006.
We are also pleased to announce that our bookstore has expanded its offerings to include products that convey members' connection to education research and their commitment to AERA. At modest prices, we are now stocking a number of items, including AERA USB-ports and AERA duffle bags for office, home, and travel. Please visit the bookstore at http://eloop.goldlasso.com/redir.php?s=4385&u=2549258&f=2&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.aera.net%2FAERAShopper%2F and place an order for yourself or as gifts for students, family, or friends.
We very much look forward to a large turnout at the 2006 Annual Meeting. When you arrive, please come to the Moscone Center to pick up your badge and other important Annual Meeting materials and to launch your attendance at the AERA Annual Meeting. All central functions, including the AERA Onsite Headquarters Office, will be located at the Moscone Center. We have a Program of great depth this year, thanks to high quality submissions and a very hardworking Program Committee under the leadership of AERA President Gloria Ladson-Billings and Annual Meeting Program Chair, William Tate. See you in San Francisco!
Warm regards,
Felice
