Rural Reminder(s)

Because the new stimulus monies will be disbursed according to existing federal formulas, and because Title I monies in particular are distributed based on formulas that tend to favor districts with large numbers (rather than high percentages) of low-income students, the funding disparities between rural and other districts are expected to increase. Learn more at Education Week.

In other news, the draft National Rural Education Policy Agenda has been released for review and feedback. The final draft will be considered for adoption by members of the Rural Education Working Group in April.

Rural Reminder

On Tuesday, February 3, Congressman Phil Hare (D-IL) announced that he formed the House Rural Education Caucus with co-chairs Congressman Sam Graves (R-MO) and Congressman Earl Pomeroy (D-ND).

The goal of this bipartisan caucus is to help members of Congress more effectively address the educational needs of rural students, schools, and communities. The caucus will host briefings, lobby for legislation, and make sure the needs of rural schools are communicated. The group currently has 15 members. (I haven't seen an announcement about the formation of the Senate Rural Education Caucus yet, but have heard that it is in the works.)

On February 2 and 3, members of the National Rural Education Association (NREA) Executive Committee met with the National Rural Education Advocacy Coalition (NREAC) comprised of various state and national rural education organizations to establish a legislative agenda for this year. NREAC met with panels of staff members from Congressional offices in both houses to discuss education issues and their rural implications. On Tuesday, members of the NREA Executive Committee made presentations to the newly formed House Rural Education and the Senate Rural Education Caucuses.
