Election to the SIG Executive Committee

A message from Schuyler W Huck (huck@utkux.utcc.utk.edu).

TO: Officers and members of All SIGs
FROM: Sky Huck, Chair of the SIG Executive Committee
SUBJECT: Election to the SIG Executive Committee
DATE: October 4, 2006

As you probably know, the SIG Executive Committee is made up of 6individuals who serve staggered 3-year terms. At the end of next spring'sAnnual Meeting in Chicago, 2 of these positions will need to befilled: the position of Chair and 1 of the other 5 positions.

According to the SIG Handbook, any AERA member who is a member of 1 or more SIGs is eligible to fill the non-Chair slot on the SIG Executive Committee. The Chair position, on the other hand, must be filled by one of the Committee's current or past members (but not by the person who isending his/her term as Chair).

In early 2007, an election will be held to determine who will fill the 2 open positions. Related to that coming election, this message constitutes a formal "Call for Nominations" for the 1 non-Chair position that must be filled in April.

You are welcome to become a nominee yourself or to encourage someone else to become a nominee. Any nominee must prepare a brief biographical statement (using no more than 100 words). Anyone who sends me such a "bio"will be considered an official nominee. All bios must be submitted to me electronically using my e-mail address (shuck@utk.edu). DO NOT SEND YOUR BIO BY SIMPLY RESPONDING TO THIS MESSAGE!

There is an 15-day interval during which candidates can submit their 100-word biographical statements. That period begins tomorrow, October 5, and it ends at midnight 2 weeks from tomorrow, on Thursday, October 19.

On Friday, October 20, I will send ALL biographical statements to the SIG Executive Committee's nominating subcommittee. That subcommittee will review the bios and then identify 3-4 individuals whose names will go on the ballot (and whose bios will be posted on AERA's website).

As in previous years, the criteria used by the nominating subcommittee in identifying the 3-4 finalists include, but are not limited to, (a) at least 5 years experience as a full AERA member, (b) membership and leadership in 1 or more SIGs, and (c) demonstrated scholarship. Nominees should keep these criteria in mind when preparing their biographical statements.

All 11,000+ SIG members will be eligible to vote during the election, and the top vote-getter will join the SIG Executive Committee.

In closing, I'd like to say that the SIG Executive Committee is highly important to the SIG component of AERA. It was established to be an advocate for SIGs, and its members oversee, evaluate, and recommend policies and procedures for SIGs to AERA's top legislative and policy-making group, the Association Council.

IMPORTANT NOTE #1:
AERA has a longstanding policy that prohibits any widespread campaigning for elected positions in the Association. In particular, no "mass mailing"or electronic listservs may be used to solicit votes. Basically, the publicized biographical statements by themselves are considered to be the appropriate "campaign messages."

IMPORTANT NOTE #2:
Anyone wishing to become a candidate for the open positions on the SIG Executive Committee should send his/her 100-word biographical statement directly to me using my personal e-mail address (shuck@utk.edu). Do NOT send your "bio" to the full set of SIG members receiving this message.
