About the Rural Ed SIG and This Blog Space

The American Educational Research Association (AERA), founded in 1916, is concerned with improving the educational process by encouraging scholarly inquiry related to education and by promoting the dissemination and practical application of research results. Special Interest Groups (SIGs) provide a forum within AERA for the involvement of individuals drawn together by a common interest in a field of study, teaching, or research when the existing divisional structure may not directly facilitate such activity. The Association provides the SIG's program time at the Annual Meeting, publicity, scheduling, staff support, viability, and the prestige of AERA affiliation.

The purpose of the Rural Education SIG is to encourage and support rural education research through scholarly conversation about the lives of rural people, places and their schools through research and provides a forum for dissemination of this research. Membership dues are $8 for one year and $15 for two years.

This blog space is the website for the Rural Education SIG. As a blog, it will allow the executive to make announcements, short notices, and regular updates. As the "Comment" feature is enabled on each and every entry, the blog allows any member to engage in a discussion with the executive and other members on any posted issue. The system will also create a SIG archive which can be referenced as time goes by. This format will lead to a much improved flow of information to and from our membership.
